5-MTHF folic acid – 120 vegan capsules

AED 116.00

5-MTHF folate activated folic acid

Folic acid  is an essential, mostly synthetically produced B vitamin that the body converts into folate. This conversion process is not very effective and takes time. With the APOrtha ® 5-MTHF folate folic acid capsules you supply your body with activated folic acid directly; conversion into folate is no longer necessary.

The human body needs folate for all growth processes, cell division and blood formation. But most people consume significantly too little folic acid: in this country, an average of over 82 percent, as shown by a large-scale study commissioned by the Federal Ministry of Food, Agriculture and Consumer Protection.

Why 5-MTHF Folate?

Folic acid is the oxidized monoglutamate precursor form of folate. It was first synthesized in pure crystalline form in the 1940s. It does not occur in nature and has no biological functions. In order to be utilized by the human body, it must be metabolized and reduced to methyltetrahydrofolate (5-MTHF) through a multi-step enzymatic conversion, with the enzyme methylenetetrahydrofolate reductase (MTHFR) playing a key role.

On the other hand, natural folates can be found in foods as polyglutamate. Before absorption, they must be hydrolyzed in the intestine to the monoglutamate form, which occurs through active transport across the intestinal mucosa. Consequently, the monoglutamate form is reduced to tetrahydrofolate (THF) before entering the bloodstream and ultimately converted to 5-MTHF, again through the enzymatic remodeling of MTHFR. Thus, 5-MTHF is both the metabolic and active form of folate. It is the predominant and circulating form of folate in our body.

Folates in foods are unstable and can be oxidized (by heat, light and/or metal ions). The bioavailability of naturally occurring folate can be reduced when cooking foods. For these reasons, consuming folate through fortified foods and dietary supplements (5-MTHF/folate and folic acid) is much more effective.

What is folic acid / folate and why do we need the vitamin?

The following structurally related compounds belong to the group of folates:

  • The biologically active form 5-methyltetrahydrofolate (5-MTHF or L-methylfolate), which can also be found in small amounts in foods and as a food additive. 5-MTHF is the predominant physiological form of folate found in blood and umbilical cord blood.
  • Folates naturally occurring in foods, which also occur in many chemical forms, in the polyglutamate form.
  • Folic acid (FA), which is contained in many dietary supplements or added to fortified foods (e.g. cereal products, pasta, fortified bread, fruit juice), is an oxidized, synthetic, water-soluble vitamin that belongs to the B complex group and is found in nature as such does not exist.

Folic acid / folate is involved in many important metabolic processes in the body.

  • Folate contributes to the growth of maternal tissue during pregnancy.
  • Folate has a function in cell division.
  • Folate contributes to normal blood formation.

The name “folic acid” goes back to the Latin word “folium” – in German “(plant) leaf” – because folic acid is found in higher concentrations, especially in green leafy vegetables. Folic acid can also be found in tomatoes, legumes and whole grain bread. However, the vitamin is very sensitive to external influences such as light, oxygen and heat. Vegetables and salad, for example, lose up to two-thirds of their folic acid content simply by being stored at room temperature. Vegetables lose a lot of folic acid when they are cooked.

In general, there are significantly fewer vitamins in fruits and vegetables today than there used to be, for example in the time of our grandparents. The soils are often depleted, fast-growing varieties are preferred and industrial agriculture is taking its toll. In addition, hardly anyone manages to eat the recommended five portions of fruit and vegetables every day – really every day. This corresponds to around 400 grams of vegetables and 250 grams of fruit – daily. 1 And if so: Have I really taken the right amount of the vitamins that are particularly important to me? In all probability not – this is shown, for example, by the final report of the current consumption study II 2 , which examined the diet and nutrient supply of over 15,000 young people and adults.

The majority of folate levels in Germany are too low

For men and women of all age groups, the average folic acid intake is well below the recommended amount. 79 percent of men and 86 percent of women do not consume enough folic acid. These proportions increase with increasing age. 3

The German Nutrition Society (DGE) recommends that young people and adults consume 300 micrograms of folic acid daily. 4

Folate / folic acid if you want to have children and during pregnancy and breastfeeding

For pregnant women, the recommended amount is 550 micrograms; for breastfeeding women, 450 micrograms per day is recommended. If possible, you should start taking nutritional supplements before pregnancy to ensure that you already have enough folic acid when you become pregnant. The DGE recommends that women who want to become pregnant consume 400 micrograms daily. 4

Folate is one of the most important vitamins when you want to have children, during pregnancy and breastfeeding, as it is needed for cell division and blood formation.

Folic acid is found in various foods such as whole grain bread, green leafy vegetables, tomatoes and legumes. Folic acid is a very sensitive vitamin, so it is partially destroyed if stored for too long or by cooking. A sufficient supply of folic acid through food is not always guaranteed, even with a balanced diet.
